Quarterly Estimated Tax

Also called: Estimated Tax Payments, 1040-ES, Quarterlies

Federal income tax and self-employment tax paid in four annual installments by taxpayers whose income isn't subject to withholding.

Full definition

Freelancers, sole proprietors, landlords, and gig workers whose income doesn't get W-2 withholding must pay quarterly estimates to avoid IRS underpayment penalties. Payments are due April 15, June 15, September 15, and January 15. The safe-harbor rule: pay in at least 100% of the prior year's tax (110% if prior AGI > $150,000) and no penalty applies regardless of current-year income. Most solo operators use the safe harbor to avoid recalculating quarterly.

Used for

  • freelancer tax compliance
  • landlord tax planning
  • self-employed tax scheduling
