Schedule E
Also called: IRS Schedule E, Supplemental Income and Loss
The IRS form landlords and real estate investors use to report rental property income and expenses.
Full definition
Schedule E is the rental property tax form. Landlords and real estate investors report gross rents and deductible expenses (mortgage interest, property tax, insurance, repairs, depreciation, management fees) per property. Passive activity loss rules restrict when losses can offset other income. Serious landlord bookkeeping systems should track expenses by property AND by Schedule E category so tax season is a matter of copying totals, not sorting receipts.
